Healthy living for Dummies

Why consider healthy housing?

To understand a complex topic like indoor air hygiene, one has to be interested in it. Here, we try to explain the necessity our concept was developed for in a few words.

Air is a life giver and of great importance to our physical efficiency and to our health.

We spend 90% of our time indoors. Whether we feel comfortable and stay healthy, depends strongly on the air we breathe.

Modern buildings have a tighter building envelope than old ones. The exchange with ambient air (i.e. the air exchange rate) is 10 times lower today than in the past, when the window glass would still show frost patterns in wintertime. This air exchange rate will further decrease due to state regulations (the so-called 'EnEV 2012' for Germany).

The image below shows on the left-hand side how before 1994 harmful emissions from building products and furniture could evaporate through joints and cracks. On the right-hand side, however, one can see an accumulation of pollutants due to the airtight building envelope and the (necessary) insulation.

The result of this is that today the indoor air is up to four times more polluted than fresh air. With newly built and recently renovated buildings, which are both modern and energy-saving, we protect the environment and the climate, but without certified low-emission building products and trained planners and tradesmen we also create cages full of harmful substances for us to live in.
